Born in 1985, Eduardo Mendez, also known as Mugsy, is a Costa-Rican MC, currently residing in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York. Heavily influenced by the greatest rappers to bless the microphone before him, such as Notorious BIG, Big Pun, and Rakim, Mugsy continues to embody that notorious, raw, New-York sound. Bill Wilcosky, of independent-review fame, raves about the Brooklyn MC, stating, “It’s all about attitude with this genre of music, and this guy has it.”
In the past year he has been published by numerous hip-hop websites, and blogs, including hiphoplead.com and skewln.com. His accolades also include opening for members of the infamous group D-Block, as well as being a finalist for The-Source-Unsigned-Hype Tour. His latest project, 2 Minute Warning, a seven-track EP that showcased his incredible talents, successfully sold over 1,000 copies. Never statisfied, Mugsy's plans to increase the awareness of his name in 2012 include a free mixtape, set for a February release, a single to be released for sale on iTunes, and numerous shows across New York Ctiy. He continues to deliver that raw sound that defines him as an artist, but also defines an underground-independent movement as a whole; it is movement he intends to be at the forefront of.
“It is to 4th Down and Mugsy’s eternal credit that they let the music breath beneath their rap. In my honest opinion good rappers take the heightened tension and spew it out as lyrical bullets aimed at the center of your brain, making a relentless, unstoppable force. This is exactly the kind of Hip Hop that should be better heard and understood.”
-Steve Gilmore His vocals boast a percussive signature that is decidedly his own, while tinted with melodic shades at times reminiscent of a cold Jay-Z. He asserts a cryptic quest that appears on the outside to be an unholy union of a combative rage against the manacles of his origin and a plea to the very streets to themselves embrace that origin. -David John de Mattos |
